As of March 29, I have less that four months left of school! What?!?! How is this possible? As of April 1, 2014...only 119 days, or three months and 28 days. I won't start a daily countdown quite yet. Soon!
So, I am in my OB rotation and I LOVE it!! I know this is what I want to do with my nursing degree. I have had a couple shifts in labor and delivery, one observation in the NICU and one shift in postpartum. I can't wait to have my shifts in the newborn nursery doing newborn assessments. I need to make sure I know what I am doing as my instructor doesn't miss a beat. Maybe I am being naïve, maybe it's just because I love babies, but I know this is where I belong. I have had a great experience so far. The nurses I have been paired with are so great and love teaching and have been so nice to get me involved. I know this has a huge impact on my experience (sadly I have had not so great nurses...everyone can have a bad day though, right?) I just had my first OB exam and I did better on this one than I did on both peds exams. I am taking that as a great sign too...I love learning about pregnancy and babies!
Yesterday, my clinical group paired with another clinical group and we got the opportunity to tour and learn about a birth center. I went in a bit skeptical, but learned an awful lot. I am not convinced I would ever want to have a baby in a birth center...give me a cold, medical room with doctors and nurses! I am the worrier and would always worry something awful would happen and you are now in a house without the needed medical supplies. With that said, they have many, many successful births. I also and going to look into doing a shadow day at the birth center. The nurse manager also said they are looking to hire a full time RN. Not sure I would want to work there, so a shadow day may give me more info and help me to see if that would be something I would enjoy doing.
I now need to get back my focus and work on prep work for clinical tomorrow. I also have my final appointment with the dentist, along with the final installment of my payment. Ouch. I am not looking forward to it. They say it should only take about 30-40 minutes. Let's hope it's that quick, and mostly pain free. I am sure to have my mouth numbed again, which is always a delightful experience.
Off to work!
